Despite of the negative influence by SARS, the economic and trade exchanges between Hong Kong and south China's Guangdong Province grew rapidly in the first five months of this year, a senior provincial official said Friday.

Trade between Hong Kong and Guangdong was valued at 20.9 billion US dollars in the first five months, surging by 20.7 percent compared with the same period last year, said Zhong Jianhui, deputy head of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.

The direct investment from Hong Kong in Guangdong soared 29.9 percent to reach 2.86 billion US dollars.

The bilateral trade cooperation covered cargo transport, service trade and investment. As the two regions were experiencingstructural readjustment, they should make use of each other's strong points, he said.
