The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said 7,000 minors have been recruited as combatants by armed groups in Colombia, a local radio reported on Friday.

Colombia is one of the countries with the largest number of children involved in armed conflicts, UNICEF spokesman Damien Perzonnaz said.

UNICEF is ready to continue to serve as an intermediary between the Colombian government and the rebel groups to liberate more children, Perzonnaz said.

The United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), the largest right-wing paramilitary group in the country, set free 40 minors this week as token of goodwill, after coordinating with UNICEF.

A report by Colombian authorities reveals that between 30 and 40 percent of the rebel groups' members are minors.
