A meeting between Israeli security officials and Mohammed Dahlan, Palestinian National Authority (PNA) minister responsible for security affairs, was underway Saturday night at the Israeli coastal city of Herzliya.

The local Ha'aretz Daily reported on its website that the meeting, began at about 9:30 pm local time (1830 GMT), was hosted at the home of US Ambassador to Israel Dan Kurtzer in Herzliya.

This was the first high-level security talks between the two sides after the Aqaba summit in Jordan despite a bloody week of bombings and missile strikes that left 60 people dead on both sides.

Also on Saturday the PNA higher committee for national security accepted an Israeli proposal which would allow the PNA to take overthe security responsibilities for the Gaza Strip.

The proposal sent by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon includes a bilateral three-day ceasefire treaty, saying Israel would stop targeting Palestinian militants in exchange for Palestinians halting suicide attacks against Israel.

However, Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, a hardline Hamas leader, said earlier on Saturday that his group would not halt its attacks against Israel. "The word ceasefire is not in our dictionary," he said.
