Iran Calls for Regional Cooperation to Combat Terrorism

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi on Saturday urged regional countries to cooperate with each other to combat terrorism and extremism.

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi on Saturday urged regional countries to cooperate with each other to combat terrorism and extremism.

He made the remarks while welcoming his Saudi counterpart Prince Saud al-Faisal.

"Tehran and Riyadh have good cooperation regarding fighting terrorism because terrorism threats all of us," Kharazi said.

Referring to cooperation between the two countries in fighting the al-Qaeda network, Kharrazi said all countries should expand cooperation toward this end.

He also stressed the importance of continuing cooperation and consultations over Iraq issue, saying "any effort in that connection depends on the fact that the United States and Britain, which are currently administrating Iraq's affairs, continue their consultation with Iraq's neighbors in running its affairs."

Al-Faisal, for his part, stressed that Iraq's neighboring countries could "play an important role in that country."

Al-Faisal arrived in Tehran on Saturday for a one-day visit to discuss issues of mutual interest and latest regional developments with senior Iranian officials.

During his visit, the Saudi top diplomat is scheduled to meet Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, conveying to him a message from Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud.

He is also due to meet Iran's Expediency Council Chairman and former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani before winding up his visit.
