Suzhou, the famous cultural city in east China's Jiangsu Province, has vowed to develop a power generating capacity of 10 million kw in the next five years to ensure power supply to the city and the neighboring regions, said the local source.

Suzhou presently has a total power generating capacity of 3.74 million kw, which is expected to increase rapidly with the massivelaunching of a series of new and expansion power projects in Taicang, Changshu and Zhangjiagang, three cities along the YangtzeRiver under the jurisdiction of Suzhou.

The Huaneng Power Plant in Taicang has invested 5 billion yuan (602 million US dollars) to develop two generating stations, each with a capacity of 600,000 kw.

The Changshu Power Plant has launched the expansion projects, which involve the development of three generating stations, each with a capacity exceeding 600,000 kw.

Another new plant, Huaren, being built at a cost of 6 billion yuan (722 million US dollars) in Changshu, has the potential to develop a power generating capacity of 1.2 million kw.

The first generating station with a capacity of 600,000 kw willbe operational by 2005 and will be linked to the East China Power Grid.

In addition, the Shazhou Power Plant in Zhangjiagang, built with an investment of nearly 5 billion yuan (602 million US dollars), will be put into operation between 2006 and 2007. It will feature two coal-fueled generating stations, each with a capacity of 600,000 kw.
