US Envoy Arrives in Israel Amid Intensive Regional Violence

A US delegation headed by special envoy to the Middle East John Wolf has arrived in Israel in an effort to prevent further escalation of violence, Israel Radio reported on Sunday.

A US delegation headed by special envoy to the Middle East John Wolf has arrived in Israel in an effort to prevent further escalation of violence, Israel Radio reported on Sunday.

Wolf is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz on Monday, the report said.

In latest conflicts, which came just one week after the Aqaba three-way peace summit, more than 50 people were killed and hundreds of others were wounded on both the Israeli and Palestiniansides.

Members in the delegation are senior officials from US State of Department, Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Council.

Their mission will be holding urgent talks with the two sides ina bid to block any further bloodshed.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Friday that Wolf's mission was an effort "to assist the two sides, even in their darkest hour, to remember the vision of peace."

In another development, Sharon's bureau chief Dov Weisglass leftfor Washington on Saturday night for talks with US National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.
