Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres is expected to win a election for the position of temporary chairman of the Labor Party after former party chairman Binyamin Ben-Eliezer quitted the competition, Israel TV reported Tuesday.

Ben-Eliezer held a press conference Tuesday evening, announcing that he was withdrawing from the election scheduled for Thursday and he would support Peres to serve the temporary position.

According to the report, Ben-Eliezer's decision came after the Labor agreed to discuss a modification on the party's constitution proposed by him at a meeting of the Central Committee instead of the party's convention.

Ben-Eliezer, a powerful figure in the Labor, was quoted as saying that he would vie for the position of permanent chairman in the party's primary elections scheduled in 2004.

Ben-Eliezer's withdrawal increases the possibility that Peres would win the temporary position. The prominent statesman has obvious dominance over the other two candidates -- former Cabinet Minister Ephraim Sneh and senior party member Danny Atar.

Earlier this week, Ben-Eliezer said he would attend the electionbecause his demands for modifications on the party's constitution had not been made.

He also proposed that the temporary chairman not be eligible to run in elections scheduled for June 2004 for the position of permanent chairman, which would be the party's candidate for prime minister in the next general election.
