China Publishes List of Top 500 Traders, 200 Exporters

The trade volume of the top 500 trade enterprises hit US$257.44 billion, or 41.5 percent of China's total trade volume in 2002; the top 200 export enterprises exported US$96.18 billion worth of products, making up about 29.5 percent of the country's total exports last year.

China Petrochemical International Co. LTD and Foxconn group, a firm making electronic and information products, topped the country's top 500 trade enterprise and top 200 export firms in 2002.

The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) publicized the list on Tuesday, rating the country's top performers.

The trade volume of the top 500 trade enterprises hit 257.44 billion US dollars, or 41.5 percent of China's total trade volume in 2002, the MOC said.

The top 200 export enterprises exported 96.18 billion US dollars worth of products, making up about 29.5 percent of the country's total exports last year.

The qualification for the candidate enterprises was increased in the rating, the MOC said, noting that the floor export requirement of the top 200 export enterprises was 171.72 million US dollars in 2002, a rise of nearly 30 million US dollars year-on-year.

Average exports of the 200 largest exporters rose US$79.18 million from last year, while average trade volume of the 500 biggest foreign traders climbed US$82.51 million to US$431.8 million.

The number of enterprises making electronic and information facilities accounted for over one third of the top 200 export enterprises and about half of the top 20 export firms as well.

The proportion of foreign-funded firms increased in the rating, and of the top 200 export enterprises, 87 were foreign-funded ones, five more than last year.

The proportion of these foreign-invested companies' exports among the 200 largest exporters' total increased to 45 percent from 37.8 percent. Their average exports also rose to US$49.74 billion from US$37.01 billion.

Most of the companies on the list are located or headquartered in China's coastal areas. The 200 largest exporters include 159 firms in the east of the country, seven in central and western China, and 34 under the central government.

Among the 500 largest foreign traders, 412 are in the east, 31 in central and western areas, and 57 under the central government.

The rankings are based on Chinese customs statistics for companies that have trading rights.

Both parent companies and their majority holdings are taken into account when computing their imports and exports, said the Ministry of Commerce.
