's drive to woo tourists back to its shores got off to a roaring start Wednesday, with the launch of a six-month marketing programme
Visitors and Singaporeans can look forward to seeing pop star Ricky Martin in August, a Bollywood Extravaganza in November and a World Wrestling Entertainment Smackdown in December.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is pumping $50 million into the drive, called Singapore Roars. Of that sum, $10 million will be spent on a worldwide advertising blitz to let foreigners know that it is safe to visit Singapore again.
The STB, in collaboration with the tourism industry, has also lined up travel discounts, one-for-one deals and lucky draws to entice visitors.
Travellers, for example, will enjoy reductions of up to 50 per cent on air ticket and package prices on Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, United Airlines and Qantas.
The Singapore Roars programme follows a $230-million relief package for tourism and transport-related industries announced in April and a $2 million Step Out Singapore campaign last month.
The tourism industry, which with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore is expected to add another $150 million to the Singapore Roars campaign, hopes to attract four million visitors between now and December, and generate more than $4 billion in revenue.
Visitor arrivals have plunged about 70 per cent since the SARS outbreak in March. But there are already signs of a recovery.
Based on arrivals in the first two weeks of this month, overall figures for June are expected to be 45 per cent to 50 per cent more than last month.
