The exposition industry, which was severely affected by the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), has been recovering in Shenzhen, a booming city in Guangdong Province, south China.

A city official in charge of the industry said the 14th international timepiece, jewelry and gift exposition would be the first among many postponed large-scale expositions to open in Shenzhen, after the World Health Organization lifted travel advisory against the city.

The exposition was originally scheduled to take place in April but will now open on June 25.

Shenzhen accounts for a quarter of the world's timepiece production capacity.

The official said protection measures would be in place during the event, so all participants could feel secure.

An exhibition on the Olympic Games, an automobile expo, an international photoelectric expo, an international forum on fashion, a holiday and leisure apparel design contest, and an international furniture expo, which were all postponed because of SARS, will be held this year.

Preparations and promotion activities for the expos are underway.

Guangdong Province was one of areas worst hit by SARS. The World Health Organization (WHO) issued an advisory against travel to the southern Chinese province on April 2, and lifted the advisory on May 23.

Eight expositions that were scheduled for May and June in Shenzhen were canceled or postponed.
