US President George W. Bush on Friday named Scott McClellan to succeed Ari Fleischer as new White House press secretary.

McClellan, 35, had been Fleischer's deputy since Bush came to office in 2001. He will take over Fleischer's job as Bush gears up for his 2004 re-election campaign.

"I've known Scott for a long time," Bush said while making the expected announcement outside the White House as he boarded a helicopter for a trip to a fundraiser in the southern state of Georgia. "He'll be able to do the job, like Ari did, with the highest amount of professionalism and class."

Fleischer announced his intention to resign last month to go into the private sector. He had been the public voice of the Bush administration during the US wars against Afghanistan and Iraq.

McClellan, a Texas native, had been a spokesman in Bush's office since 1994 when he was governor of Texas. He was the Bush campaign's traveling press secretary in the 2000 presidential campaign.
