About 12 people were slightly injured Friday when a freight train derailed and crashed into several homes near an intersection in City of Commerce, eastern Los Angeles.

The accident happened at the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Ferguson Drive, where the 29-car train loaded with lumber hit the homes in the residential area, said Metrolink spokeswoman Sharon Gavin.

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Mark Savage told the CNN thatthree homes were badly damaged and 12 people were injured, one of them suffering from moderate injuries while the others had only minor wounds.

Savage said it remained unknown if the victims were residents in the damaged homes or people on the train. He added that there was no leak of hazardous material in the area.

Three rescue squads and 10 ambulances have been dispatched to the scene. A triage area was set up near the scene of the accident with red, yellow and green tarps layed out and ambulances waiting nearby.

There was no word yet on what caused the derailment. Officials were particularly concerned about the possibility that a gas line may have been ruptured, but no fires have yet been reported.

The California Highway Patrol is also aiding in the search and rescue operation, according to Darren Harris of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Metrolink train services are expected to be disrupted for some time, according to Gavin. Metrolink officials are looking into alternatives for their commuting passengers.
