Forty-four people were injured in two separate traffic accidents in the Eastern Cape province on Friday, the South African Press Association reported.

Tshepo Machaea, traffic official in the province, said a bus collided with a stray animal at Elugelweni, near Mount Ayliff, about 550 km south of Johannesburg, shortly after 10 am (0800 GMT)and the driver lost control.

The vehicle, carrying 62 passengers, was on its way from Tabankulu to Kokstad. Thirty passengers were injured, 12 seriously.

Meanwhile, 14 people were injured in a three-car pile-up in Umtata, more than 800 km southeast of Johannesburg, shortly after 8 am (0600 GMT), Machaea said.

The accident happened at the intersection of Nelson Mandela and Delville roads when a vehicle allegedly skipped a traffic light.

All the injured were traveling on a car.

They were taken to the Umtata General hospital for treatment.

South Africa has the best road infrastructure in the continent, but its road-vehicle collision and fatality rates compare poorly with those of most other countries.

Every year about 10,000 people are killed and 150,000 injured in approximately 500,000 accidents. The cost of road traffic accidents is estimated at more than 13 billion rand (about 1.66 billion US dollars) a year.
