An explosion has occurred in an oil pipeline northwest of Baghdad, the US military in
Iraq
said on Sunday.
"There was a pipeline explosion northwest of Baghdad near the town of Hit. There are no reported US casualties," a US military spokeswoman said.
The cause and the time of the explosion is not clear, and an expert team has been sent to the site for investigation, the spokesman added.
Thamer Ghadhban, a senior Iraqi official in charge of oil, said Saturday that Iraq will begin to export oil next month on the sidelines of an extraordinary meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in
Jordan
.
A main oil pipeline from Iraq's Kirkuk oilfields to
Turkey
was damaged earlier this month by explosions just one day after Iraq signed the first oil export contracts with six foreign companies.
But the pipeline has been repaired and is working well.
