Ten bodies had been recovered from the Yangtze River by 16:00 Sunday with 49 others still missing after a ship collision on a section of the river in southwestern Chongqing Municipality.

The identities of four victims had been confirmed, with one being the passenger liner captain Chen Shifu, officials said.

Two tons of salvage equipment arrived in Chongqing Sunday at noon by air from northern China's Tianjin port and Shanghai, China's biggest port at the Yangtze River mouth.

Authorities said they were still unable to confirm the position of the passenger liner because of the murky water and fast water flow.

They said a new salvage program was under discussion.

The State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) is leading an investigation team to probe the cause of the accident and supervise salvage operations.

A Yangtze River Three Gorges Shipping Co., Ltd. passenger linercapsized last Thursday after colliding with a freighter heading upstream near Longqiao town, Fuling district, Chongqing.

The passengers reportedly included students and vegetable sellers on their way to market.
