SARS Reduces Incomes of One in Four Beijing Residents

Some 25 percent of working people in Beijing had slimmer wallets in May at the height of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in the city.

Some 25 percent of working people in Beijing had slimmer wallets in May at the height of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in the city.

A survey by the Beijing Municipal Statistics Bureau indicated that the incomes of these people fell by between 20 percent and 60percent, with those working in the accommodation and food sectors hit hardest.

The survey showed that in May, the average income stood at 1,497 yuan (181 US dollars), but in the accommodation and food sector it fell to 946 yuan (114 dollars).

The incomes of those engaged in transportation, postal or community services and other service sectors were also below the city's average.
