Finland's parliament on Tuesday elected Defense Minister Matti Vanhanen as the country's new prime minister to succeed Anneli Jaatteenmaki who resigned last week amid a scandal over leaked documents.

Lawmakers voted 109-67 for his appointment. The decision has yet to be officially approved by President Tarja Halonen later in the day.

Vanhanen comes from the Centre Party. Jaatteenmaki, the first woman prime minister of the Nordic state, resigned on June 18 after two months in office over a scandal of leaked secret documents on Iraq.
