Rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) Tuesday abducted some 100 students from Rwara Girls School in northeastern Kaberamaido district, reported Radio Uganda.

Soroti women MP Alice Alaso told the parliament on Tuesday that the number of those abducted could be as many as one hundred.

Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) spokesman Shaban Bantariza confirmed the abduction, saying that "our helicopters are trying to locate them so that they may be rescued."

In another attack, the LRA rebels Tuesday ambushed a passenger bus near Soroti, in northeastern part of the country, killing fourpeople.

Ugandan Minister of State for Defense Ruth Nankabirwa told the parliament that the UPDF managed to repulse the rebels who attacked Mandera, a suburb of about 5 km from Soroti town.

The LRA rebels recently extended their areas of operation from northern Uganda to the northeastern region.

However, the army spokesman explained that escalation of fighting in northeastern Uganda was not a show of strength for therebel group, but was precipitated by the routing of the rebels from northern Uganda.

The LRA rebels, based in southern Sudan, has fought the Ugandangovernment for last 17 years, abducting over 15,000 children and displacing some 800,000 people.
