At a teleconference on wildlife protection on June 25, deputy governor Li Ronggen of South China's Guangdong Province pledged the province's endeavor to publicize the possible harms done to public health and biological balance by bad eating and drinking habits so as to lead the masses to conscious refusal of wildlife eating.

An order on rectification must be given to units doing wildlife businesses which lack legal, steady source of wildlife supplies or engage in unlawful operations; or wildlife breeding units which fail to meet technical standards or lack breeding conditions or techniques, or keep prohibited breeds or engage in illegal operations. Their licenses will be revoked according to law if they fail to meet the requirement by exceeding the time limit, Li stressed.

Industrial and commercial administrative departments at all levels should exercise overall management of wildlife-related special markets, trade fairs and restaurants by closing special wildlife trade markets, stopping approving applications for signboards, billboards and enterprise registrations concerning wildlife eating.

In addition, departments of road, rail and air transportation, as well as navigation and postal service must tighten examination and supervision over the transporting of wildlife and related products, and enforce strict procedures for certificates on undertaking wildlife transportation business.

The customs must strengthen its supervision and administration on the import and export of wildlife and related products, and crackdown on trafficking and smuggling of such products.

The public security departments, procuratorial organs and courts are asked to support the administrative departments in exercising their rights of investigation and prosecution according to law, and firmly investigate and affix, according to law, the criminal liabilities of those hunting, killing, buying, selling, trafficking, carrying, mailing and smuggling wildlife and related products.

Li also asked discipline inspection and supervision departments to spell out regulations on punishing Party cadres who eat wildlife illegally and investigate into their unlawful conducts accordingly.
