Russia plans to deploy in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan two air groups with five Su-25 attack-fighters each by late August, a source at the Russian Defense Ministry told Itar-Tass on Thursday.

The Su-25s will be deployed near the Tajik capital of Dushanbe and on the Kyrgyz Kant airfield. They will be an air component of the Central Asian collective quick reaction forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

In case of emergency the air groups in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan will be augmented by Su-27 fighters (by five aircraft for each air group) from air bases in the Russian territory.

After fulfilling their tasks the jets will return to their bases in Russia, said the source.

Vladimir Mikhailov, Russian Air Force Commander-in-Chief, said Thursday that the official opening of a Russian military air base at Kyrgyzstan's Kant airfield would take place in early autumn.

"The base will be officially opened in two to three months," Mikhailov told Interfax in Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek.

He said that he and Kyrgyz Defense Minister Esen Topoyev had signed the agreement on the Russian air base's status and the terms of its deployment in Kyrgyzstan.
