The Russian government will consider the possible ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Khristenko told a news conference in Moscow on Thursday.

The government will need some time to complete the review of the protocol, he said. "But this will not be a matter of years," Khristenko noted.

Meanwhile, he stressed importance of ratifying the protocol from the point of view of possible "economic threats for Russia from the implementation of measures envisaged in the protocol."

The protocol, which has been ratified by 110 countries, commitsindustrialized nations like Russia to cutting their emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which are blamed for global warming.

Under a complex weighing system, the agreement cannot come intoforce until Russia, responsible for 17 percent of the world's dioxide emissions, ratifies the deal.

Moscow has repeatedly vowed to ratify the deal, while offering no concrete date.
