First China network advertisement contest was officially inaugurated in Beijing on Wednesday. It is so far the largest network advertisement event sponsored by departments in charge of the advertisement sector.

Since the first domestic network advertisement appeared in 1997, network advertisements following those of TV, newspaper, radio, weekly and outdoors have become a burgeoning force in the past five years, said Mr. Qu Jianmin, director-general with the department of advertisement supervision & administration under the State Administration of Industry and Commerce at the press briefing held in Beijing the same day. Now network advertisements see a steady increase in business volume with the annual growth scale exceeding those of traditional media. Some industries also raise inputs in network advertisements. In a sense, Chinese network advertisements enjoy up-and-coming development potentials.

Mr. Qu Jianmin also noted that Chinese government has in recent years been following the development of network advertisements with keen interest, as shown by regularizing market orders of network advertisements and giving policy support. Currently the domestic network advertisement industry as a whole is still at an initial stage for development.

The business volume of Chinas advertisement industry amounted to 90.3 billion yuan in 2002, while the network advertisement industry only scored some 500 million yuan, 0.55 percent of the total.

Latest forecast shows that by 2010 China will have surpassed Japan to become the second major advertisement market, next only to the US. Holding this network advertisement contest is of great significance to both the Chinese advertisement industry and the network industry.

Sponsored by China Advertisement Association, this contest adopts systematization in prize setting, appraisal manners & standards, judge composition and other aspects, which makes it the only one at home. Besides, with awards divided into those appraised by professionals and those by the public, results of the contest will be announced by the end of August.
