After 12 years of preparation, construction of a 32.4-kilometer-long cable-stayed bridge began Friday 108 kilometers upstream from the mouth of the Yangtze, the longest river in China.

Scheduled to be completed in 2009, the bridge links Suzhou Cityto the south of the Yangtze, and Nantong City on the northern bankof the river in east China's Jiangsu Province.

The bridge consists of an 8,200-meter-long section spanning theYangtze, and two extended sections on both sides of the river. It will have six lanes in two directions.

The total cost for the project is estimated at 6.45 billion yuan (780 million US dollars).

Construction of the bridge is expected to ease navigation problems caused by ferries at the Yangtze estuary. The bridge is also expected to play a role in linking highway networks across the river.
