China Opens World's Longest Steel-arched Bridge

China opened what it says is the world's longest steel-arched bridge during a ceremony in the commercial capital Shanghai on Saturday .

China opened what it says is the world's longest steel-arched bridge during a ceremony in the commercial capital Shanghai on Saturday .

The 2.5 billion yuan ($302 million), 3.9-km (2.4-mile) Lupu Bridge, which crosses the Huangpu River, was inaugurated by Chinese basketball player Yao Ming, who led about 1,000 people in a fun run across the structure to mark the event.

The bridge is built from steel, and its 550-metre (1,800-ft) arch is longer than the previous record holder, the New River Gorge Bridge in the US state of West Virginia, state media said.

Shanghai is spending billions of dollars on infrastructure projects ahead of the 2010 World Exposition, including bridges, tunnels, roads and a massive extension of its subway network.

The city is also building the world's tallest building, a 492-metre (1,600-ft) high skyscraper, due to open by 2007. ($1 ; 8.277 yuan)
