Central China Province Starts Road Rebuilding

Hunan Province in central China has kicked off a five-year road renovation program with an investment of 4.3 billion yuan (519.5 million US dollars).

Hunan Province in central China has kicked off a five-year road renovation program with an investment of 4.3 billion yuan (519.5 million US dollars).

One project that began of recent is the rebuilding of a 27.36-kilometer inter-county road between the two poverty-stricken counties of Ningxiang and Anhua. It will be completed in one year at a cost of 28 million yuan.

Sources with the communications department said the province plans rebuild 12,951 kilometers of roads linking counties to villages or townships and 564 kilometers of inter-county roads by 2007 to boost the rural economy.

Under the government plan, an investment of 2.78 billion yuan (335 million US dollars) will be made in 238 road renovation projects with a total length of 3,800 kilometers this year.

Between 2003 and 2005, about 8,000 kilometers of roads between villages and townships as well as 300 kilometers of inter-county roads will be completed.
