A giant bronze tripod has been erected in Guang'an city, the birthplace of the late Chinese leader, Deng Xiaoping, in southwestern Sichuan Province, to prepare for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the great leader's birth.

Located in Siyuan Square, the tripod, standing 10-meters high and weighing 41.8 tons, is believed to be China's largest bronze vessel, local officials said.

The tripod bears the inscription of one of Deng's most famous quotations "emancipating the mind and seeking truth from facts" while the vessel's pedestal bears the full text of Deng's 1992 southern tour speech.

A spokesman from the Guang'an city bureau of construction said the building of the tripod was funded through donations from neighboring Yibin city, some 400 kilometers southwest of Guang'an.

He said the 8-hectare Siyuan Square is one of several key projects comprising preparations for next year's celebration of the 100th anniversary of Deng's birth.

A musical fountain and an outdoor water-screen movie theater onthe square are also being planned to mark the anniversary.

Born in Guang'an in 1904, Deng's greatest gift to Modern China was his leadership of the country's reform and opening-up drive in1978, which saw China emerge as the world's most dynamic economy.

He died of illness in Beijing on February 19, 1997 at the age of 93.
