China has been undertaking major repairs on the Chinese side of a highway-railway bridge on the border with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), for the past two weeks, a local official said Sunday.

The bridge, known as the China-DPRK Friendship Bridge, was built in the 1950s, after American bombers destroyed the Yalu River Bridge during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.

The border bridge has two parts, with the upper one for trains and lower one for automobiles.

The Shenyang Railway Bureau has invested over 2 million yuan (240,000 US dollars) to repair the Chinese part of the highway bridge, which is 569.9 meters long, comparing to the total length of 946.2 meters.

It is the first major repair for the highway bridge since 1977.
