ECOWAS Foreign Ministers to Meet on Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire Crises

Foreign ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will meet on Friday in Gha na's capital Accra to discuss new developments on the Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire crises, according to a statement released in Abuja on Monday.

Foreign ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will meet on Friday in Ghana's capital Accra to discuss new developments on the Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire crises, according to a statement released in Abuja on Monday.

The meeting will mainly discuss matters related to the possible deployment of a multinational force in Liberia to end the four-year bloody civil war.

ECOWAS Executive Secretary Mohammed Ibn Chambas will address ECOWAS foreign ministers on the sub-regional security situation, with the emphasis on Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire.

Brokered by ECOWAS chief mediator Abdulsalami Abubakar, Ghana hosted an ECOWAS peace meeting on Liberia on June 4 attended by representatives of the rebel groups and the Taylor-led government.

A ceasefire agreement signed by the warring sides during the meeting was violated early last week when rebels of the Liberia United for Reconciliation and Democracy moved from their position into Liberia's capital Monrovia.

The renewed fighting erupted last week had left some 300 peopledead and over 1,000 others injured.

The Abuja-based ECOWAS has 15 member states. It was set up in 1975 aimed at promoting regional economic integration and stability.
