A national key project to transfer electricity from southwest China's Guizhou province to south China's Guangdong province was completed and started official operation Monday.

The project will add 1.5 million kilowatts in power generating capacity to the province. So far, the province has benefited from five million kilowatts from the western region.

It is part of China's plan to turn the rich water and coal resources in the economically backward Guizhou into electricity to support the economic development in eastern and southern coastal areas.

The project, with investment totaling 3.03 billion yuan (365 million US dollars), will greatly alleviate the high demand for power in summer, said Guangdong officials in charge of power management.

Under China's 10th Five-Year Plan for 2001-2005, facilities with a combined generating capacity of 10 million kilowatts will be built for Guangdong.

Shanghai, Beijing, and the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang and other areas will also benefit from the power-transmission projects, which are also part of China's strategy to develop its western regions.
