A train engine and two coaches fell off a bridge and landed on a fish market and parked taxis in southern India Wednesday, killing at least 18 people, officials said.

The train was pulling into the station in the central city of Warangal when its brakes failed, said Bandaru Dattatreya, India's minister of state for railways. Officials said the train was diverted off a main line and derailed when it reached the bridge.

Television footage showed trapped passengers peering through the barred windows of carriages swaying precariously from the bridge.

Railway officials confirmed that at least 18 people were killed, including at least six in the fishmarket under the bridge. Other officials said the engine landed on parked motorized-rickshaws, killing their occupants.

At least 25 people were injured, local police said. The death toll could rise as rescuers tried to cut open the carriages.

The Golconda Express was headed to Secunderabad, near the state capital of Hyderabad.

The accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m., said Nalin Prabhat, a police superintendent at Warangal. The city is about 95 miles north of Hyderabad.
