Russian President Vladimir Putin said in Moscow Wednesday that Mongolia was "an old and very reliable partner" of Russia.

In a meeting with visiting Mongolian Prime Minister Nambaryn Enkhbayar, Putin said Russia attached great importance to the relations with Mongolia and that he was pleased with the smooth development of bilateral ties on a new basis.

"Mongolia for Moscow is an old and very reliable partner," Putin said.

Enkhbayar noted good relations with Russia had been the priority of Mongolia's foreign policy and hailed Moscow's efforts to relieve Ulan Bator's debt burden.

"We are grateful to Russia's leaders for their desire to solve this issue," said Enkhbayar, who arrived in Russia on June 26 for a working visit.

Mongolia owes Russia about 11 billion US dollars.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov proposed on Tuesday to forgive part of Mongolia's debt by increasing Russia's stake in Erdenet, Mongolia's state-owned copper mine.
