Yantian port in Shenzhen, an economical boom city in Guangdong province, reported a sharp increase in the number of visiting ships in the first half of this year, with 8,173 logged for the six-month period.

The figure was a 23 percent rise over the same period last year, according to statistics from the port's border inspection station.

The number of arrivals of Chinese and foreign crewmembers at the port topped 71,383 in the first six months of this year, up 18.5 percent year-on-year.

The port handled 2.3 million twentyfoot equivalent units (TEUs)in the first half of the year, up 29.7 percent on a yearly basis, statistics show.

Port sources said that the port now operates 53 international navigation routes.

In view of the number of international routes in operation and the number of ships visiting the port, the Yantian port border inspection station and customs have jointly worked out simplified procedures for customs clearance and adopted pre-inspection measures to shorten the time of ship stays at the port.

The pre-inspection measures have saved close to 1,000 hours forboth the shipping companies and the port since the beginning of the year.

Yantian port plans to expand its port facilities to increase its container handling capability.

The Yantian Port Group and a Hong Kong company have signed an agreement on construction of the third phase construction of the port. The two sides will jointly invest 6.1 billion yuan (nearly 740 million US dollars) to build four berths each with a capacity of over 100,000 tons along a coastline of 1,400 meters.

The four berths are designed to handle two million twentyfoot equivalent units (TEUs) annually. The first berth is expected to go into operation within the year.
