GUUAM States to Push for Closer Cooperation

The leaders of the GUUAM member countries Friday pledged to work together unswervingly for regional peace, security, stability and prosperity and agreed to enhance cooperation in the fight against terrorism and separatism.

The leaders of the GUUAM member countries Friday pledged to work together unswervingly for regional peace, security, stability and prosperity and agreed to enhance cooperation in the fight against terrorism and separatism.

A joint communique issued by the leaders of Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Moldova at the end of their summit in the Black Sea resort of Yalta said participants reached consensus on a wide range of issues they discussed.

The communique highlighted the importance of concerted efforts to combat drug trafficking, money laundering, illegal arms deals and organized crime.

The five countries will step up cooperation in the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism, the communique said.

Closer economic cooperation among the countries was a top priority of their governments, it said.

The leaders discussed the implementation of plans for a free trade zone and called for swift removal of obstacles to free trade.In their cooperation in opening up a transport corridor in the GUUAM region, more competitive conditions for transportation should be first of all created, it said.

During the meeting, the leaders signed seven documents on cooperation in various areas.

Representatives from the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSECO) as well as 19 countries also attended the meeting.

GUUAM, formed in 1997, was designed to strengthen economic ties among former Soviet republics.
