Former District Court President Wang Yuzhong of Haikou, the capital of China's southern island province of Hainan, was sentenced to 13 years in jail for bribery and being unable to prove legitimacy of the large sum of money he had collected, the Intermediate People's Court of Haikou said Friday.

The court said Wang, 53, took 200,000 yuan (24,000 US dollars) in cash in 1998 from the Hainan Hongqing Real Estate Company's general manager, surnamed Lao, because Wang, as president of the Xinhua District Court, decided to purchase Lao's company-developed houses for his court staff on condition of the sum Lao had promised.

In 1993, Wang had taken another 300,000 yuan (36,000 US dollars)in cash from Hainan Zhenfa Property Development Company for his consent to a joint housing development program, according to the Intermediate People's Court.

In addition, Wang failed to prove that 780,000 yuan (94,000 US dollars) he possessed was legal income, the court said.
