Sino-Vietnam Railway Freight Volume Hits Record High

In the first half of this year, a total of 629 trains traveled the Dianyue Railway, which links southwestern China's Yunnan province with Vietnam, carrying a record more than 337,600 tons of freight.

In the first half of this year, a total of 629 trains traveled the Dianyue Railway, which links southwestern China's Yunnan province with Vietnam, carrying a record more than 337,600 tons of freight.

Of the total freight volume, 86,845 tons were imported freight,a rise of 117 percent over the same period of last year, and 250,761 tons were exported goods, up 13 percent, according to the latest statistics from the provincial railway department.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Dianyue Railway, which runs from Kunming in Yunnan province toHai-phong in Vietnam. In the past century, the railway played a vital role in promoting economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

After being suspended for some two decades, the railway reopened in 1996. Since then, the transport volume increased to nearly 600,000 tons in 2002 from some 40,000 tons in 1996. Meanwhile, the types of goods increased to over 60 varieties.

By the end of this year, the total freight volume is expected to reach 700,000 tons.
