Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stressed Monday that a truce is key to achieving peace between the Palestinians and Israel.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with a group of servicemen,Mubarak said he hopes that the three-month truce announced by Palestinian groups would be sustained so that stability and peacein the region could prevail.

He also urged Israel to meet the requirements of the truce."It is important for Israel to release Palestinian prisoners, withdraw from the Palestinian lands and return to the negotiatingtable to settle pending issues," he said.

Last Sunday, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's mainstream Fatah movement issued a statement, saying it would immediately halt allmilitary operations against Israelis.

The announcement came just a few hours after the PalestinianIslamic resistance movement Hamas and Islamic Jihad (Holy War)agreed on the ceasefire on condition that Israel would stop aggression against the Palestinians and its policy of targeted killing.
