Cigarette Warehouse Manager Sentenced to Death for Embezzlement

The Intermediate People's Court of Fuyang City, in east China's Anhui Province, has sentenced a cigarette filter warehouse keeper to death for his illegal sales of filters.

The Intermediate People's Court of Fuyang City, in east China's Anhui Province, has sentenced a cigarette filter warehouse keeper to death for his illegal sales of filters.

Zhang Dongliang, 37, the manager of the Fuyang Cigarette Factory, was also deprived of his political rights for life along with his personal property, according to the court.

Zhang collaborated with his colleague, Shen Zhaoming, to sell filters from the warehouse at reduced prices to Fujian native Zheng Jiaxing in 1995 and in 1998, raking in a total of 2.48 million yuan (299,000 US dollars) in illegal profits and generating 4.31 million yuan (519,000 US dollars) in losses to his factory, the court said.

Three years later, the factory's new leader ordered a thorough inspection of all warehouses, and Zhang fled with his remaining 1.2 million yuan to the southern province of Hainan, where he was arrested recently.

According to the court, Zhang's accomplice, Shen, has died, butthe circumstances surrounding his death were not provided. The court did not disclose details about Zheng's detention or punishment.
