North China's Hebei Province plans to pour four billion yuan (484 million US dollars) into building highways in its rural areas in the next three years.

Asphalt roads will be built to link up the province's counties and townships in the next three years, according to sources with the provincial communications bureau.

Due to historical reasons and shortages of funds, highways in the province's rural areas are dilapidated and in disrepair. Moreover, the province still has 170 townships that do not have access to asphalt roads.

To improve rural traffic conditions, the provincial government plans to build a total of 5,000 km of highways to link up some of its counties and townships between 2003 and 2005.

Meanwhile, construction on expressways and highway arteries is also progressing smoothly.

At present, six of the nine planned expressway projects and 46 of the planned 61 highway arteries are under construction in the province.

Statistics show that the province poured 4.448 billion yuan (542 million US dollars) into highway construction in the first half of the year, or 41 percent of its annual investment in traffic facilities construction.

Total investment in highway construction is expected to reach 8.118 billion yuan (982 million US dollars), including 3.13 billion yuan (378 million US dollars) for expressway construction by the end of October this year.
