US Ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow pledged that American special services would share any intelligence information with their Russian colleagues in order toprevent terrorist attacks.

Given the recent terrorist acts staged in Moscow, Vershbow saidthat US special services that have been cooperating fruitfully with their Russian counterparts "will share any intelligence information they have to help preventing future terrorist acts of this kind," Interfax reported Thursday.

The ambassador also stressed that in the current circumstances, the main responsibility "of course rests on the Russian law enforcement agencies and special services, but "we certainly want to do all we can to help our Russian partners in fighting this threat."

The main area of US-Russian cooperation is in dealing with the international dimension of the terrorism problem, he pointed out, commenting that "our efforts have helped in cutting off weapons and financing to the Chechen terrorists through other parts of theCaucasus."

"It is very alarming that Chechen terrorists are adopting the technique of suicide bombing and launching attacks in Moscow as well as in Chechnya itself," Vershbow said.

He noted that the United States have categorically condemned the recent terrorist acts, stressing that "there can be absolutelyno justification to the use of violence against civilians in pursuit of any political cause".

"We will continue to support efforts to find a political solution to the Chechen conflict, which, at the end of the day, isthe only way to end the tragedy," the US ambassador said.

A Chechen woman has been detained for attempting to produce a serious explosion in downtown Moscow early Thursday morning. A Russian security officer was killed while trying to defuse the bombing device hidden in the woman's handbag.

Suicide blasts in suburban Moscow during an out-door rock concert last Saturday killed 16 people, including the two female terrorist attackers who are believed to have Chechen background.

Russia Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov told the press Thursday that a unit of terrorists coordinated from the same center is acting in Russia to prepare terrorist acts in a number of Russian cities.

Investigation indicates that the bombing in Moscow's Tushino airfield on July 5 and the Thursday explosion in a central Moscow street are linked, according to the minister.

"We have certain information that will enable us to shortly hunt down this unit, which is training female suicide bombers," Gryzlov said.
