Major Water Control Project Launched in South China

South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is to launch a key water control project this year, with total investment estimated at 5.816 billion yuan (700 million US dollars).

South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is to launch a key water control project this year, with total investment estimated at 5.816 billion yuan (700 million US dollars).

The project, co-sponsored by the China Power Investment Group (CPIG) and two other companies, is located at the Changzhou Islet section of the Xijiang River, which runs through Guangxi. It constitutes part of the country's huge west to east power transmission project.

According to an official with the CPIG, the key water control project will give rise to a total installed generating capacity ofover 620,000 kw, with average annual electricity generation reaching 3.091 billion kwh.

The Changzhou Water Control Project will involve power generation, shipping, irrigation and aquatic breeding. The first generating unit will be put into operation by 2007, and the whole project will be completed by 2008, the official said.
