Shanghai, China's major economic powerhouse, is building the country's largest yellow rice wine (Shaoxing wine) production base, with annual production capacity forecast at 40,000 tons.

Rice wine, with a history of several thousand years, is regarded as one of the three most time-honored wines in the world.

Experts here note that yellow rice wine has vast market potential in China. Currently, the annual per capita consumption of rice wine in China stands at one liter, compared to 20 liters of beer.

The country produces 1.5 million tons of rice wine each year, with consumers mostly concentrated in east China's Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces and Shanghai.

The new Shanghai Jinfeng Brewery Co., Ltd. grows out of the Shanghai Fengjing Brewery, one with 60 years of experience.
