The Chinese men's water polo team is back to the world swimming championships, after a 12-year-long break, aiming at defeating their arch rivals Japan in the 10th FINA World Championships which open here on Saturday.

"Our goal in Barcelona is simple - trying to beat Japan in the preliminary rounds," said Chinese head coach Cai Tianxiong.

"And we take the world championships a good opportunity to learn more about the advanced strategy and skills and have the young team steamed through competition," he said.

Cai admitted that the two Asian sides are no match to any of the European teams and what they could do is just to try to win a game and make progress per game in the discipline.

Ranked third in Asia, China would have no chance to compete in the 2003 world championships and the team made it to Barcelona dueto the pull out by Kazakhstan, who are ranked second to Japan in Asia.

The 16 participating teams are pooled into four groups of four for the three-day preliminary round starting on Monday. China is in Group C, together with Greece, Italy and Germany.
