The presidents of Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria have pledged to increase cooperation among their countries and speed up the construction of European Corridor 8, ATA news agency reported on Sunday.

The construction of European Corridor 8 will accelerate trilateral economic cooperation and development of markets in the three countries, the leaders said in a joint statement issued in Macedonia's southern resort of Ochrida Saturday evening.

They added that the construction will also deepen friendship among their peoples.

With financial aid from the European Union and international financial institutions, the statement said, the three countries will speed up the building of highways, railways, ports and an oiland gas pipeline, which together will form the corridor.

The statement also lauded the achievements made by the three countries in their cooperation in politics and economic reforms and maintenance of regional stability.

The three presidents first met in Bulgaria on Friday and held further discussions on the issue in Albania's Pogradeci on Sunday after their meeting in Ochrida.

European Corridor 8, when completed, links the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Varna and the Albanian Mediterranean port of Durazzo via Macedonia. An oil and gas pipeline will also be built between Burgas and Durazzo. It is the largest infrastructure project on the Balkan Peninsula.
