Indonesia to Host Asia-Europe Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Indonesia will host the gathering of foreign ministers from Asia and Europe under the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) forum, scheduled in Bali on July 21-24, it was announced in Jakarta Monday.

Indonesia will host the gathering of foreign ministers from Asia and Europe under the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) forum, scheduled in Bali on July 21-24, it was announced in Jakarta Monday.

"Post-Iraq war situation, non-proliferation of nuclear in (the Democratic People's Republic of) Korea and the global impact of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) will be among the main agendas in the meeting," said Arizal Effendi, director general forAmerican and European Affairs under the Indonesian Foreign AffairsMinistry.

He told reporters here that all ASEM member countries have confirmed their participation in the forthcoming meeting.

However, while 10 Asian countries will send their ministers in the meeting, only seven out of 15 European countries will be represented by ministerial-level officials, he added.

He said the Bali meeting will give opportunity for South Korea,China and Japan to hold talks on the nuclear issue in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

ASEM's Asian membership includes China, Brunei, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines while 15 European Union member countries and the European Commission make up the other side.

ASEM, formed in 1996, holds summit every two years while foreign, finance and economic ministers meet annually.
