France welcomes the renewed involvement of the United States in the Middle East peace process and considers that Europe still has much to do in this area, French President Jacques Chirac on Monday.

The current situation in the Middle East was "intolerable" and he is "not very optimistic" on this issue, said Chirac in his traditional live televised interview on France's national day.

France welcomes Washington's re-engagement in trying to resolvethe conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians, he said.

Washington "has a special role to play, given its relations with Israel and its resources, in contributing to an improvement in the conflict," said the French president.

But the United States can not achieve the peace process alone and Europe still has much to do in this area, he added.
