Britain's Prince Charles honored Russia's World War II sacrifice on Monday with a wreath-laying ceremony in St. Petersburg and fired the traditional noontime cannon shot from the city's fortress.

Charles, who arrived Sunday evening, walked solemnly behind goose-stepping soldiers as they laid a wreath to the Motherland monument at the Piskaryovskoye Cemetery, which honors the more than 1 million people who perished during the Nazis' 900-day siege of the city.

Later, Charles did the honors for the city's daily noontime tradition by firing the cannon from the fortress' wall overlooking the Neva River.

Charles also visited a children's environmental center and met with social and health workers. In the evening, he was to tour the Hermitage Museum.

On Tuesday, the prince is to hand over a training yacht to the Baltic Fleet as a gift from the Royal Navy.
