1,000 Congolese Refugees Flee to Western Uganda

Nearly 1,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have streamed into Uganda via Mpondwe border post, Kasese district, due to ethnic clashes in the Ituri region, reported local daily the New Vision on Tuesday.

About 182 hunger-stricken refugees stormed the border last weekend amid US President George W. Bush's visit to Uganda.

The refugees, including Hema, Lendu and Wangite from Bunia and Tcgomya, were quoted as saying that they were going to Aru, Ntoroko, Bundibugyo and Kampala in search of their relatives.

The refugees said they would take refugee in Uganda until the situation at home gets better.

A French-led peacekeeping military force had sporadic clashes with the Lendu-led militiamen loyal to Ituri factional leader Thomas Lubanga since they entered the northeastern DRC region.

Save the Children Fund (UK) recently rescued 25 unaccompanied children in various parts of Ntoroko county, western Uganda.

Uganda's western regional Save the Children team leader Be Bantaringaya told press that some children had lost both their parents in ethnic battles in Bunia.
