Sautin Best in 3m Springboard Prelim at Swimming Worlds

Russia's superstar and defendingchampion Dimitri Sautin, continued with superb performance when hescored a top-ranked score in the men's three-meter springboard preliminaries at the 10th FINA World Championships here on Tuesday.

Sautin, 29, winner of individual springboard titles at last twoworld championships, was fresh from his 3m springboard synchronized triumph on the discipline's opening day last Sunday. He collected a total of 460.80 points after six dives. His sixth and last dive, a reverse one and a half somersaults with three anda half twists, earned him a day-high 90.09 points. The judges awarded him two 9.5s, four 9.0s and a 8.5.

China's Wang Tianling, runner-up to the Russian both in 2001 championships in Fukuoka and in the 3m springboard synchro event here, collected a total of 456.45. His last dive, a reverse two and a half somersaults with one and a half twists, earned him the day's second highest score of 86.10 points.

American Troy Dumais, fifth in Fukuoka in 2001, was third with 444.99.

Chinese Peng Bo, 4th in the 2001 championships, finished 7th.

The top 12 finishers of the preliminaries will be split into two groups for the semi-finals later on Tuesday while the top three of each semi-final groups qualify for the final in the evening.
