Severe Rainstorms Hit SW China City

Guangyuan City of southwest China's Sichuan Province has been pounded by severe thunderstorms since around 3:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Guangyuan City of southwest China's Sichuan Province has been pounded by severe thunderstorms since around 3:00 a.m. Tuesday.

During the period from 3:00 a.m. Tuesday morning to Tuesday noon, precipitation in the Yuanba District, the worst-affected area of the city, reached 203 millimeters of rainfall, according to the report released by the city's disaster relief office Tuesday afternoon.

Most areas of the district have been flooded, with the deepest floodwater at 1.2 meters.

Local government officials have rushed to the flooded areas to direct rescue work, and more than 30 armed policemen aboard rescuevessels have been dispatched to rescue residents trapped by the flood.

The weather forecast calls for continuing torrential rains on Tuesday night.
