Unidentified individuals hijacked aboat with 20 people on board in the eastern Cuban province of Camaguey in the early hours of Tuesday.
Authorities said that the hijacking, taking place 500 kilometers from Havana, was the second incident of this kind in two days.
The boat, belonging to State-run company Geo Cuba, is currentlyin the territorial waters of Bahamas.
Upon learning of the situation, the Cuban authorities informed the US coastguard and sent a military plane to explore the area.
The
United States
announced it will not intercept the boat for it is in a zone known as "innocent pass."
Cuba, on the other hand, indicated "it is not a government policy to assault kidnapped boats in high seas because of the serious risk of life losses" and said it is up to the authorities of Bahamas or the United States to comply with the immigration agreements signed with Cuba.
On Monday, three people died and one child was injured by bullet in a confusing attempt to capture a boat in La Coloma harbor of Pinar del Rio province in western Cuba.
The Cuban authorities blamed the United States for promoting the capture of boats by keeping in effect the so-called Cuban Adjustment Law of 1966, which grants automatic residence and laborrights to Cuban immigrants reaching US territory by whatever means.
